I think we've all been in the position where we're unsure
of how to reach the market we look to service.
It's a popular subject and one that doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.

Let's discuss how we've found success in market penetration

Word of mouth advertising has always worked for me. I recently had a session that was referred from a client from 3 years ago. You just never know when or who your clients will refer you to! I also keep shooting; the more I put on my page, the better I do. I've noticed that even just putting some instagram pics up keeps folks remembering what I do.
I use Squijoo for fresh marketing templates, price lists and overlays and BP4U guides for my contracts, model releases and print release forms. It is amazing how much easier it is now to be professional!

There are so many photographers, so many good photographers that are already well established, so it can be pretty hard to know where you fit into the market when you are first starting out. I knew my target market was happy families, natural mommies, and anything shot at the beach. Luckily, as a mom, I have a lot of mommy friends. Working a few of their family sessions and tagging them on Facebook was the only marketing I did for the entire first two years after I started my business. I loved the clients that I had and wanted a million more just like them.
Word of mouth and facebook has been incredible for me. I’m also a loud mouth and tend to pass my card out whenever the situation is called for. I’m outgoing and that works in my favor, both in sessions and in attracting new clients.
Photoshop is not my strong suit. After trying my hand at it too many times to count, I realized I would save a massive amount of time by paying those designers who have already created gorgeous templates. No need to reinvent the wheel and I can use the time saved to concentrate on different things. If you are looking to rebrand and need some help, I highly recommend Victoria Williams Graphic Designs

I needed to fully understand my brand before I was comfortable identifying my target market. I feel like my style of photography attracts a certain type of person: a mother, one who saves up for the occasional splurge, who values the time her family spends together, who recognizes the significance of the imperfect moments that help define us... your real, everyday, average, middle-class mom. That's who I want to photograph and that's who I market to.
Once you've filtered significantly enough to identify who you want to attract, consider where they're going to be... then go there. I market by being present in my community; I volunteer and donate to various groups like the PTA.
I create marketing materials based on visual impact, and ones that reflect my brand through Squijoo. Once your client has created an emotional attachment to your photography, it is considered brand awareness and brand loyalty... and that's the best kind of marketing there is.

Long story short, marketing means selling yourself.
In order to do that, you've got to know
who you are, what you're capable of, and
value your work enough to be put yourself out there.
We created an excellent checklist of things that have worked for us.
